9. EnFormAction : This novel concept of En-formation is a synthesis of both Energy and Information. So I invented a new portmanteu word to more precisely encapsulate that two-in-one meaning : “EnFormAction”. In this case though, the neologism contains three parts : “En” for Energy, “Form” for Shape or Structure or Design, and “Action” for Change or Causation. But Energy & Causation are basically the same thing. Time is Energy
Energy causes Change which we call Time
The notion that “Time is a form of Generic Energy” popped into my head as I read the magazine article. And it makes sense from the unconventional perspective of Enformationism. Yet, I was surprised to discover that it was also a feature of the alternative scientific model called Energy Wave Theory (EWT)⁸. It’s a serious attempt to understand Energy & Matter in the light of Quantum Physics. “This site is intended for those that are open to discussing alternative models to explain the universe and the subatomic particles that govern everything we see. . . . All theoretical work in EWT must be proven in math and match existing data and experiments.” So, unlike Enformationism, EWT can’t be easily dismissed as mere conjecture.
Of course, Time is not literally the same thing as the meta-phorical fluid that we imagine as “Energy” : the cause of all physical Change, both positive and negative. Instead, Time is merely how we measure the expenditure of Energy in the form of Entropy (negative trends). Since Energy itself is not a sensable phenomenon, we like to think of it as a river flowing from a mountaintop into the valley. And yet along the way down, we get some value for the sunk-cost of Time. The cosmic payback is what we call Evolution, in the positive sense of living creatures descending from inert material.
At the beginning of Time, the eventual emergence of thinking creatures might have seemed to be a poor investment. But, in retrospect, that would have been short-sighted. Moreover, one consequence of the consumption of Time is the expansion of empty space into a complex cosmos. Some cosmologists have long searched for an undetectable repellant force, working like negative gravity, pushing matter apart into adjacent unoccupied space. But there may be no need for an anti-gravity force, if Time itself is a form of Generic Energy. Is Time Dark Energy?
The Philosophy Now reply, referring to cosmic Time, concludes with : "It is the catalyst that allows energy and matter to move, combine, and break apart, creating the universe, and through entropy, destroying it". Again, that sounds like my multifunction concept of EnFormAction⁹. It’s the potential for change as it transforms into actual novelty in the world : moving, combining, destroying, and rebuilding all temporary elements of the universe.
Claude Shannon was only interested in one form of Generic Information¹⁰: non-specific containers for meaning¹¹. Since those bits of en-forming ability are not yet actualized, they exist only as statistical probabilities : Potentials. However, just as potential energy states can be transformed into actual Energy deeds, Shannon’s inert stand-ins can be converted into powerful actors in the real world. Physicists recently performed experiments in which inert Information was used to perform real work, as-if it was a potential form of causal Energy¹². Such experiments may lead to empirical proof of the philosophical conjecture that Information is Energy.
